The Genealogy of the Moy Shee Clan

The "Redbook"

The development of this book was a natural progression from the translation of several books written in Chinese that described the history of the Moy Shee Clan. From the Moy's in early China to the Moy's in 21st century America, this English narrative presents the migration of Moy's to America. Family associations were created to provide social and financial support amongst the members. Personal family stories written by members of the Moy Family Association in Washington, DC depicts the journey that their ancestors took to make a better life in America.

Excerpts

From Part 1.1

"The original name of the Moy clan was Qi 契 . Then a new name of Jia 子 was bestowed by Yu 大禹 the Great (the founder of Xia 夏 Dynasty c.2070-1600 BC) to one of his royal magistrates for helping him tame the Yellow River."

From Part 1.6

"Guangzhou (Canton) 廣州 is the capital and the biggest city in Guangdong Province. It became the central hub for Chinese going oversea. The Moy clan had special ties with its 3 villages: Taishan 台山 Duanfen 端芬, Shunde 順德 Dragon Hill 龍山, and Nanhai 南海 Nine River Delta 九江 from where majority of oversea Chinese came out of."

From Part 1.12

"After the railroad was built, many Moys settled in Chicago in mid 1870s. Chicago Chinatown was known as “Moytown” in the book “Chinese Chicago” (2012) by Huping Ling talks about the Moys and said there were eight Chinese family associations in Chicago in the 1920s, including Moy Shi Kung Sow (Moy Family Association). There are more Moys in Chicago than other Chinese families. The national Moy Family Association is in Chicago. See “Chinese in Chicago 1870-1945” (2005) by Chuimei Ho and Soo Lon Moy"
